Restrictions Are Back As Omicron Variant Explodes

It’s official: indoor masks will be mandatory once again as of midnight in NSW as NSW explodes to 5715 new Covid-19 cases on Thursday.

Premier Dominic Perrottet recently announced that the new indoor mask rule will be in place and this rule will continue to be enforced until January 27.

News.com.au further confirms that it will be mandatory for hospitality venues to abide by a new two square metre rule starting December 27.

Mr. Perrottet said in a statement, “we believe today’s changes are modest, cautious, and take a precautionary approach. As we move through this holiday period to the end of January the system is in a very strong position.”

NSW chief health officer Kerry Chant explained that about 80 percent of NSW cases are caused by the Omicron variant, which “largely explains the steep rise in cases.”

On the plus side, Mr. Perrottet revealed as per Dr. Chant that the Omicron strain appears to be less severe than the Delta strain.

“It looks like the Omicron will be probably five times less severe than Delta,” Mr. Perrottet quipped.

“The early signs are encouraging.”
