A Week Of Chaos: Rail Workers, Teachers & Nurses Plan Strikes Next Week

Four days of chaos is coming up for Sydney as train drivers, nurses and teachers prepare for a strike next week as per 9 News.

Train drivers are reportedly commencing their industrial action on Tuesday, beginning with keeping trains to a top speed of 60km/hr. By Friday, drivers will reportedly refuse to operate foreign-built trains.

The state government met with rail unions recently to offer a three percent pay rise in exchange, they want to stop the planned strike. The union has reportedly agreed to talk to members, but they are quite certain the strike will still go ahead as planned.

The union has claimed the government has not addressed safety concerns over new trains. “They have just said straight out they don’t agree to modifying the train at all,” a spokesperson said.

Some nurses and midwives will be walking off the job on Tuesday as well, though the union has confirmed as per 9 News that enough nurses will be on duty that patient care will not be compromised.

On Thursday, Public and Catholic school teachers in New South Wales will also be on strike. The Guardian confirms that they will strike next week after the state government handed down its budget on Tuesday including the already announced 3% lift to the public wage cap, which the NSW Teachers Federation and the Independent Education Union believe will act as a cut to real wages.
