James Cameron Reveals ‘Avatar 2’ Needs to Gross $2 Billion to Just ‘Break Even’

It looks like there are some massive expectations for Avatar 2 to perform well at the box office, and it’s a pretty huge number.

Although director James Cameron isn’t willing to provide a number on how expensive it is to bring about “Avatar: The Way of Water,” the only answer Cameron would provide regarding the sequel’s budget was “Very fucking [expensive],” according to an interview with GQ Magazine.

Cameron reportedly told Disney and 20th Century Studios executives that the budget for the Avatar sequel was so high it represented “the worst business case in movie history.” According to Cameron’s estimates, “you have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history. That’s your threshold. That’s your break even.”

Cameron’s original 2009 “Avatar” ranks at the top as the highest-grossing movie worldwide with $2.9 billion. Disney’s “Avengers: Endgame” is in the second position with $2.7 million, while Cameron’s “Titanic” is still in the third slot with $2.1 billion. That means, according to Cameron, if “Avatar: The Way of Water” wants to break even, it’ll need to overtake either “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($2.07 billion) or “Avengers: Infinity War” ($2.05 billion).

“Avatar: The Way of Water” opens in theaters on December 16.
