Serbia’s Novak Djokovic wins his 22nd Grand Slam and his 10th Australian Open title

After missing out on last year’s Australian Open because he got deported for being unvaccinated for Covid-19, Djokovic bounced back this year by reclaiming the Grand Slam title and beating Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3 7-6(4) 7-6(5) in straight sets to win his 22nd Grand Slam title – a record he shares with none other than Rafael Nadal.

This year, Djokovic was out to prove that he is still the world’s most dominant tennis player, and he definitely did that in style. In fact, NBC New York confirms that he will also return to world No. 1 when the new ATP rankings come out next week.

“I have to say this has been one of the most challenging tournaments I ever played in my life, considering the circumstances – not playing last year, coming back this year. I want to thank all of the people that made me feel welcome, made me feel comfortable to be in Melbourne, to be in Australia,” Novak Djokovic said during the presentation ceremony.

“Only my team and family know what we have been through these past four to five weeks,” said Djokovic during his presentation speech. “This is probably the biggest victory in my life, considering the circumstances.”
